DISPOSAL IN AUSTRIA MEANS RAW MATERIAL FOR TOMORROW

By decree of the Ministry of the Environment, it is explicitly forbidden to sell a vehicle that no longer passes inspection in Austria. The owners must ensure that it is disposed of properly. We are happy to help.

In this way, valuable raw materials remain in Austria.

Old Vehicle – Valuable Raw Material

The problem had been known for years: around 350 end-of-life vehicles ‘disappear’ in Austria every day. Vehicles that have been permanently de-registered by their owners but not disposed of properly. There’s an easier way: often, used vehicle dealers take back very old vehicles, or you can use one of the phone numbers that are regularly found on the windshield. ‘We like your vehicle! We'd be happy to buy it. Even without a valid inspection sticker. We’ll pay cash.’
The vehicle just needs to go, because you have a new one now. You don't think about what should happen to the vehicle, which is barely roadworthy. In most cases, it is not disposed of properly in Austria, but dismantled illegally and then shipped on.

if the vehicle is not dismantled properly, any remaining fluids such as oil, fuel, brake fluid etc. may leak out and cause pollution. However, the dismantled or cut-up vehicles are valuable raw materials and are therefore loaded into containers and shipped abroad. Often to Africa or Eastern Europe. These raw materials are lost to Austrian industry and therefore have to be imported again.

It causes multiple problems:

  • Non-environmentally friendly dismantling leads to environmental pollution and the loss of raw materials that are needed in Austria and, most importantly, are valuable. And apart from that, these transactions are not subject to tax.

New decree defines what an “end-of-life vehicle” is

A ruling by the highest court has been in force since 1 April 2015, following a decree by the Ministry of the Environment. Before that, there was no clear definition of what a used vehicle is and can therefore be resold, and what an end-of-life vehicle is and must therefore be properly scrapped by its owner.

Conclusion: vehicles for which the repair costs are higher than the current market value of the vehicle must be properly scrapped. Reselling these vehicles is now prohibited. They may only be passed on to used vehicle dealers or specialist workshops if these have all the necessary authorisations under waste management law.
The obligation to comply lies with the owners – the range of administrative penalties is between EUR 850 and EUR 41,200.
The solution: take your old vehicle to SCHOLZ ROHSTOFFHANDEL We will ensure that it is disposed of properly and that the raw materials are processed in Austria.
And don't worry, it won’t cost you anything – in fact, you will even get paid for your old vehicle* and you can drive away with a clear conscience.
*The amount of the payment depends on the weight of the vehicle.
